In 2014, B. Smith revealed that she had been diagnosed with the early onset of Alzheimer’s Disease. Smith, a former model, restaurateur, celebrity chef, distinguished author, and lifestyle guru, married her current husband and business partner, Dan Gasby in 1992. In 2016, the duo co-authored a book, “Before I Forget”, and shared their journey dealing with the challenges of Alzheimer’s Disease and family conflict. The couple offered practical coping strategies to families caring for a loved one afflicted by the disease.
Gasby has begun a new chapter in the couple’s journey. Despite still being married to Smith, Gasby recently announced that he has a mistress. According to Gasby, his mistress has a bedroom in the couple’s marital home and often acts as Smith’s caregiver. Although Gasby claims friends and family are supportive of his affair, Smith’s fans are outraged. Critics have accused Gasby and his mistress of being gold diggers and exploiting Smith for her wealth.
Gasby’s announcement has drawn much debate among critics and supporters, however, this is an opportunity for much needed conversations and planning among family members. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 5.7 million Americans are living with the disease. Families are faced with the dilemma of trying to answer the questions surrounding what their loved ones would have wanted and the potential abuse or loss of their loved one’s wealth.
